14-year-old boy dies during football match in Bolivia

Bolivian police have charged 12 Corinthians fans with homicide after the 14-year-old died after a flare hit the boy in the eye, reportedly killing him instantly.

Flares appearing in South American stadiums is not uncommon, but police officers will interrogate suspected fans to identify who threw the firework into the away support.

Corinthians, who beat Chelsea in the FIFA Club World Championship last December, will play their forthcoming home matches in the South American version of the Champions League behind closed doors, it was confirmed last night.

Their visibly distraught manager Tite said: "I would exchange my world title for the boy's life."

The game ended 1-1, and although there was confusion in the aftermath of the match as to what repercussions would follow despite media from both Brazil and Bolivia reporting the incident, the ban will be upheld.

Tito went on to say: "I'm so sorry about what happened tonight.

"We can't talk about football, my players and I feel the same. We couldn't utter a word in the dressing room. I didn't want to be here, what happened is too heavy to be able to talk of football."

His press conference was then ended prematurely, with the club's director of football Edu Gaspar later echoing his manager's words in an emotional interview.

"There is no greater pain in the world than this," Gaspar said. "How we can we help the family at a time like this? We have to do anything we can.

"When it happened people were swearing at us and so we had to get out of the area. Our journey home will be tough. There is not much more I can say now other than to express our regret."

After the incident Doctor Jos? Maria Vargas spoke to local media at a hospital in Oruro, explaining how the boy, later named as San Jose supporter Kevin Beltran, had died. "There was a loss of brain matter as the projectile," Vargas said. "A plastic tube, penetrated the skull. Due to this, death was immediate."
