Junior dos Santos believes he has advantage in third tilt with Cain Velasquez

In a matter of months, for the third straight year, UFC heavyweights Junior dos Santos and Cain Velasquez will clash with divisional gold up for grabs. This time around Velasquez is champion, as Dos Santos was last December and Velasquez the November before that. In each instance the title exchanged hands and the same will be true this time around, at least if you ask ?Cigano?.

Dos Santos recently spoke to MMAJunkie at a 2013 UFC World Tour stop in Brazil where he offered up some insight into why he is so confident despite having been beaten thoroughly over five rounds the last time the two rumbled.

?In his mind, he knows he gave his all ? he gave everything he had ? and he couldn?t finish the fight,? explained JDS. ?I finished the fight in one minute. I think I have the advantage, and he knows that. But both me and him have to be perfect in our strategy to win this fight.?

The hard-hitting Brazilian has knocked out twelve of the sixteen opponents he?s beaten including Gabriel Gonzaga, Frank Mir, and Fabricio Werdum. That being said, Velasquez is certainly no slouch when it comes to putting opponents away with strikes, securing ten TKOs in twelve victories.

Velasquez vs. Dos Santos III is scheduled for October 19 in Houston at UFC 166.

US envoy in Egypt holds talks with rival sides

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's Interior Ministry warned supporters of ousted President Mohammed Morsi on Saturday for a second time to abandon their protest camps as a senior U.S. diplomat met with officials on both sides of the country's political divide.

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State William Burns extended his visit to Cairo by one day so he could meet military leader Gen. Abdel-Fatah el-Sissi and the country's prime minister on Sunday, an Egyptian Foreign Ministry official said. A member of the pro-Morsi delegation that met Saturday with Burns said the four delegates also would meet again with the U.S. diplomat on Sunday for more talks.

At the core of talks is the political future of the Muslim Brotherhood and its Islamist allies following the July 3 coup that ousted Morsi, the country's first freely elected president. The military coup, which followed several days of mass protests by millions of Egyptians demanding his ouster, also led to the dissolution of the Islamist-dominated parliament and the suspension of an Islamist-drafted constitution.

The Brotherhood says it is looking for concessions before beginning talks with their rivals. Such measures could include releasing detained Brotherhood leaders, unfreezing the group's assets, lifting a ban on its television stations and reigning in the use of force against its protesters.

Tarek el-Malt, who met with Burns and is a member of the Brotherhood-allied Wasat Party, said the delegation insisted that any initiatives for a way out of the crisis must center on the 2012 constitution being restored.

"Morsi would return to power in all cases," he told The Associated Press. "Whether he spends his full term in office or delegates his power to a national Cabinet is up for discussion."

However, Burns and others have signaled that the West has moved on from Morsi's presidency. Washington and others are foremost seeking stability in the Arab world's most populous nation, and have called for the Brotherhood's participation in the transition as a way to achieve national reconciliation.

The trip by Burns, his second to Cairo since the coup, comes amid heighted fears of more bloodshed after more than 80 Morsi supporters were killed in clashes with police a week ago. More than 280 people have been killed nationwide in political violence since Morsi's removal.

America's No. 2 diplomat also held talks Saturday with interim Egyptian President Adly Mansour and Vice President Mohamed ElBaradei, as did the European Union's special envoy, Bernardino Leon.

Nevine Malak, who attended the same meeting with Burns as el-Malt as part of a delegation representing those against the coup, said the session was mainly for "listening." She said the group, which includes two members of the Brotherhood's political wing, would meet Burns again on Sunday.

"Any solution or any initiative must include the return of the (suspended) constitution," she told the AP. "We don't ignore the fact that there were masses that took to the streets, but we don't ignore either that what happened was a coup against legitimacy."

Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy also met Burns and said Egyptian officials have made clear to their Western counterparts "there is no moving back." Fahmy also said the transitional roadmap adopted by the country's military-backed interim leaders is open to the Brotherhood for participation.

"There have been contacts between different figures, be they in government directly or indirectly, and those among the Brotherhood's leaders," Fahmy told journalists. He declined to describe those discussions as "negotiations."

Fahmy, who served as Cairo's ambassador to Washington under autocrat Hosni Mubarak, also said that key to the U.S. is "their interests in the region."

"I think they do that by assessing who's in power, who's not in power ... and how to deal with that situation given what their interests are," he said.

While Egyptian authorities say the political sphere is open to Morsi's allies, they are simultaneously outlining plans to break up the two main sit-ins where thousands of protesters still rally daily for Morsi's return to power. Authorities plan to set up a cordon around the sites while offering "safe passage" to those willing to leave.

In televised remarks Saturday, Interior Ministry spokesman Hany Abdel-Latif urged Morsi's supporters to end their protests, saying it would help the Brotherhood's return to Egypt's political process. He repeated the offer from the ministry, which is in charge of police, to give a safe exit to those who abandon the sit-ins.

Meanwhile, Al-Qaida's leader Ayman al-Zawahri condemned Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood in a message for having "tried its best to satisfy America and the secularists." He said that democracy is allowed only for those who agree to "be a slave for the West's ideology, action, policy and economy." The message's authenticity could not be independently confirmed but was posted on a militant website late Friday commonly used by al-Qaida.

Eagles excuse Cooper from team after racial slur - KTTC Rochester ...

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Eagles excused Riley Cooper from all team activities on Friday as the wide receiver deals with repercussions of being caught on video making a racial slur.

Cooper has been sent away from the team to get help with his issues, something the player and the team agreed upon. Coach Chip Kelly made it clear after Friday's practice, however, that Cooper would be back with the team when he's ready.

"There has never been any question of cutting Riley," Kelly said. "His status with us is not in question."

Cooper said the last few days have been incredibly difficult and he will step away to seek counseling.

"My actions were inexcusable," he said. "The more I think about what I did, the more disgusted I get. I keep trying to figure out how I could have said something so repulsive, and what I can do to make things better."

Cooper apologized profusely Wednesday after a video of him using a racial slur at a Kenny Chesney concert last month surfaced on the Internet. The Eagles immediately fined him.

"Right now, I think it's important for me to take some time to reflect on this situation," Cooper said. "The organization and my teammates have been extremely supportive, but I also realize that there are people who will have a tough time forgiving me for what I've done. The best thing for me, and for the team, is to step away for a period of time."

The Eagles did not set a timetable for Cooper's return. The team is off Saturday. They will return Sunday and then will host the New England Patriots on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday before playing the Patriots, Friday night in the preseason opener.

"He will meet with professionals provided by the Eagles during this period of time to better help him understand how his words have hurt so many, including his teammates," the team said in a statement.

Cooper spoke to the media again after practice Thursday, telling them his meeting with teammates a night earlier was "extremely emotional." Teammates Michael Vick, Jason Avant and others expressed forgiveness for Cooper. LeSean McCoy also said he forgives Cooper, but "I can't really respect somebody like that."

Cooper, who grew up in Clearwater, Fla., was selected in the fifth round of the 2010 draft by the Eagles out of the University of Florida. He has just 46 catches and five touchdowns in three years with the Eagles, but has been practicing with the starters since Jeremy Maclin's season-ending knee injury last week.

"As long as it takes, and whatever I have to do, I'm going to try to make this right," Cooper said.

Players on the team continue to be asked about Cooper's situation, making it a distraction or as wide receiver DeSean Jackson called it, "a burden." Cornerback Cary Williams, a free agent addition to the Eagles this past offseason, tried to put it all in the perspective.

"This is about history," Williams said. "Some of us have had ancestors killed over that word. There is a lot of history behind it. That history needs to be addressed. I remember my grandmother telling me stories how she was called the n-word, while being bitten by dogs and hosed.

"Why did Riley say this? That's a question that needs to be asked. I still think it is the elephant in the room."

Williams also said it doesn't matter who you are or what color you are the word should never be used.

"Nobody should say it," he said. "I don't care if you white, black, blue, green or purple. The hip-hop culture uses the word and has de-emphasized it. You need to go back and see what our ancestors did to try and rid themselves of that word."

The Eagles do not plan to rid themselves of Cooper permanently. When he comes back, how will he be treated is the next question.

"He's our teammate. He hasn't been released from our team, so whatever he has to handle, he has to handle," Jackson said. "As far as the rest of the team, we have to focus on what we want to accomplish this season and not let this be a burden."

Vick, who has shown support for Cooper from the beginning, was asked what advice he would have for his teammate.

"Let this situation make me a better person," the quarterback said. "This is a good thing for Coop to get away for a while and reflect. We've already put the plan in place to help him come back full form and become one of the guys again."

Morsi supporters defy police warnings to disperse

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's military-backed government offered protection Thursday to supporters of deposed President Mohammed Morsi who end their two sit-ins ? widely seen as a first step toward dispersing the vigils on opposite sides of Cairo.

But the protesters responded defiantly: "Over our dead bodies!"

The standoff underscored the ongoing political crisis since the armed forces toppled Egypt's first democratically elected leader on July 3: thousands in the streets demanding Morsi's reinstatement, a government unable to exert its authority, and recurrent violence that has killed more than 260 people.

Rights groups, activists and politicians from rival camps, fearful of more bloodshed, tried to ward off any use of force, including a suggestion of putting a human chain around the protest sites.

International pressure grew for the interim government to release Morsi and create a process that includes his Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt's largest political faction, which refuses to deal with the new authorities.

Despite a government warning that it would disperse the vigils, the Brotherhood and its supporters announced plans to organize new mass marches Friday, dubbed "Egypt Against the Coup."

Organizers of the sit-ins outside the Rabaah al-Adawiya Mosque in eastern Cairo and a smaller one near Cairo University's main campus in Giza say the protests are signs of the enduring support for the once-dominant Muslim Brotherhood.

But mass rallies called by the military leader, Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, on July 26 showed that a large segment of Egypt's population backs the armed forces' actions against Morsi. He was overthrown following demonstrations by millions who demanding that he step down after a year in office.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry picked up that theme, telling Geo TV in Pakistan that the military was "restoring democracy." He added that millions of people had asked the army to intervene because they were afraid Egypt would descend into violence.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague spoke to interim Vice President Mohammed ElBaradei, calling for a peaceful resolution to the crisis. "I also called for the release of all political detainees, including Dr. Morsi, unless there are criminal charges to be made against them," he said.

There was no sign of a break in the stalemate.

Security officials, pro-military media and some residents near the sit-in sites increasingly view the encampments as a menace, with authorities accusing protesters of stockpiling arms, torturing and killing suspected intruders, and scuffling with locals who voice complaints.

While the protesters insist their gatherings are peaceful, the sit-ins have taken on increasingly fatalistic religious overtones, and many of Morsi's supporters have expressed readiness to die for their cause ? defending him and Islam.

The only sign of security activity before sunset Thursday was an army helicopter that flew low over the protesters.

"The Interior Ministry ... calls on those in the squares of Rabaah al-Adawiya and Nahda to listen to the sound of reason, side with the national interest, and quickly leave," Interior Ministry spokesman Hany Abdel-Latif said in a televised address.

"Whoever responds to this call will have safe passage and protection," he added.

The declaration followed a Cabinet decision Wednesday to charge the Interior Ministry, which controls the police, to disperse the sit-ins, arguing they posed a threat to national security and terrorized citizens.

But the protesters said they won't back down from their continued opposition to the military coup. They "will continue in spite of threats, and will not be made to back down from their right to peaceful protests and sit-ins, regardless of the strength of their opposition," a statement said.

From the podium outside the Rabaah al-Adawiya Mosque, one speaker shouted, "Did you see that the criminal army wants to break up the sit-in? Over our dead bodies!"

The crowd shouted in agreement: "The coup is terrorism!"

The demonstrators also chanted "Execute el-Sissi!" Loudspeakers blared songs supporting Morsi.

The protesters fortified the site, piling up sandbags at its six entrances and adding new guards who stood on alert with their helmets and sticks, sometimes climbing over the gates to check for movement. At one entrance, a second wall of concrete blocks, sandbags and tires was erected.

Medhat Ali, a teacher guarding the gates, said lines of men near the fences will be the first to warn of an impending attack.

"If they see military or police, they will alert us, and in no time the masses inside will pour in to sleep on the asphalt under their vehicles and troops," he said proudly. "We have nothing but some stones and our bare chests. We all have bid our families farewell. We will die here ? or Morsi returns."

Another protester, Magdi Shalash, dismissed the Interior Ministry warning, calling it an attempt to scare away supporters.

"This warning is like nothing. It is like air. We don't even listen to it," said Shalash, a university professor. "We will only leave as dead bodies."

Rally speakers and leading members of the Brotherhood urged more people to join the protest. In a video posted on the Brotherhood's Facebook page, Mohammed El-Beltagi urged those at home to "join us and get the honor of martyrdom."

An influential ultraconservative cleric gave an emotional appeal to authorities to avoid violence, which he said will only lead to a cycle of bloodshed.

"It is foolish to believe that the problem will end in one night and the conflict resolved in one battle," Mohammed Hasaan, said in a 17-minute recording made in a mosque and aired on Al-Jazeera Mubasher Misr, a pro-Brotherhood broadcaster.

"Beware of blood. It will be a curse on those who shed it. The military entering a conflict with Islamists is a loss for it and a real win for the Jews," he said, a reference to Israel.

A military spokesman said its troops are not taking part in the moves against the sit-ins.

Egyptian police have a track record of deadly crackdowns on street protests, and Wednesday's Cabinet move effectively gave security forces the mandate to act as they see fit.

The Interior Ministry had said earlier it would not clamp down on the protesters but will take gradual measures, including warnings and the use of water cannons and tear gas to minimize casualties.

The U.S. Embassy said it will be closed Sunday ? a normal working day. The U.S. State Department said it was shuttering its embassies and consulates throughout the Muslim world Sunday after receiving an unspecified threat. State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf cited information indicating a threat to U.S. facilities overseas and said some diplomatic offices may stay closed for more than a day.

Members of rights groups, joined by activists, organized a visit to the sit-in in eastern Cairo to inspect the place, but it ended abruptly when it descended into a political argument.

In a Facebook post, Seif Abdel-Fattah, a former Morsi adviser, called on all national groups and rights organizations to "go down and encircle (the two sit-ins) with human chains to stop the flood of blood."

Meanwhile, a leading member of Tamarod, or Rebel ? the campaign that spearheaded the petition for Morsi to step down ? said it suggested that law enforcement officials inspect the squares to ensure there are no weapons. But Mahmoud Badr said his proposal was rejected by the pro-Morsi groups.

Late Thursday, a high-level African Union delegation visited the sit-in in eastern Cairo. The delegation had met on Tuesday with Morsi in a secret military facility where he has been detained since his ouster on July 3.

Privately, the Rabaah protesters acknowledge that their sit-in is their last bargaining chip against the military and loyal media that label the encampment as a launching pad for terrorists.

Islamic militants also have been stepping up attacks against security forces in lawless areas in the Sinai Peninsula, raising fears that extremists could exploit the anger over Morsi's removal to spread insurgency.

The Brotherhood has long been one of the most powerful political forces in Egypt, even during its decades in the opposition to autocratic leader Hosni Mubarak, himself ousted in a popular uprising in 2011. But after a series of election wins, including Morsi's narrow victory last year, the group has fallen from favor.

'Words with Friends' maker takes 'Bangwith Friends' to court over name

    Video games

    Words with Friends

    Zynga

Until recently, if you heard the extended suffix "with friends" attached to something, you'd probably associate it with a handful of cutesy smartphone games like "Words with Friends," "Scramble with Friends" or "Running with Friends" ? all Zynga games, all exceedingly family friendly. But the game maker is not happy about an app called "Bang with Friends," that has, well, different intentions, and is taking "Bang with Friends" to court, alleging trademark infringement.

"This is a case about illegal free riding on recognized and valuable intellectual property rights," Zynga said in a lawsuit filed this week in California district court.

"Bang with Friends," like many of Zynga's most popular games, is an app that lives and breathes on the borders of the larger Facebook ecosystem.?

By logging in to Facebook or downloading an Android app (Apple removed the iOS version of "Bang with Friends" from its App Store in May), users can scroll through their Facebook book friends, swiping up or down to indicate whether they're down to "hang" or ahem, do more. The app, in short, promises to be "a completely anonymous way to hook up with your Facebook friends."?

That has very little in common with a game like "Words with Friends" (itself a clone of the popular board game "Scrabble.") But Zynga now says that using "with Friends" in the app's name is basically a way to draw in more users at Zynga's expense.

"Zynga filed a lawsuit to stop blatant infringement of its valuable 'With Friends' brand," Ren?e Lawson, Zynga's deputy general counsel, told NBC News in an emailed statement.?

"A company calling itself 'Bang with Friends' ... decided to gain attention for its sex-related app by leveraging Zynga?s well-known mark. Zynga is compelled to file suit to prevent further consumer confusion and protect its intellectual property rights against infringement."

In its court filing, (shared here by GigaOm), Zynga said that it had approached the hookup app developers "through informal efforts" to take action before resorting to a lawsuit, but negotiations about a possible name change eventually broke down.

"It now appears that [negotiations were] either ... a ploy or [BWF] has reconsidered in light of recent attention showered on it," Zynga said in its suit.

Bang With Friends did not respond to a request for comment from NBC News . But BWF co-founder Colin Hodge told PC Magazine that the company only heard about the lawsuit after reading about it in the news.

"As a technology company, we take intellectual property seriously and will evaluate the case in detail once we receive a copy," he said.?

Greg Boyd, partner and chairman of the Interactive Entertainment Group at the law firm Frankfurt Kurnit Klein & Selz, told NBC News in an email that the "Bang With Friends" case reminds him of Zynga's other legal disputes with the creators of "PyramidVille" (which has since been renamed "Pyramid Valley") and "Blingville," to rival game industry titan Electronic Arts, which last year sued Zynga for copyright infringement over its game "The Ville." Zynga, of course, is also known for its "FarmVille" games.

While a dispute like EA and Zynga's got into legal definitions of what parts of video games, exactly, a company is able to lay claim to, James Grimmelmann, a law professor at the University of Maryland, said that things are much more cut-and-dry in a case like the dispute over "Bang with Friends."

"It's not really a Zynga thing, it's more just a trademark thing," Grimmelmann told NBC News. "These cases have nowhere near the complexity of the gameplay lawsuits."

Grimmelmann added that BWF's best defense in this case, as with many defendants in trademark disputes, could be to claim that "Bang With Friends" was an intentional parody of the "With Friends" brand name from which Zynga is accusing it of profiting.

He said that the case likely will come down to "whether Zynga can show that there's been consumer confusion" over the "With Friends" label.?

Microsoft Will Rebrand SkyDrive After It Settles Trademark Case With Sky Broadcasting

Microsoft SkyDriveBritish Sky Broadcasting Group and Microsoft today announced that they have settled the trademark infringement arguments in Europe that Sky brought against Microsoft in an English court. As a result of this, Microsoft will have to find a new name for its cloud storage service SkyDrive. Sky will allow Microsoft to continue using the name for a “transition period,” but after that, Microsoft needs to rebrand the service. It’s not clear when Microsoft plans to announce the new name. Earlier this month, the English High Court found that Microsoft’s use of the term SkyDrive infringed on Sky’s right to the “Sky” trademark. While Microsoft could have appealed the ruling, the company chose to settle the case and has agreed not to go ahead with an appeal. The settlement includes some financial terms, but the details of these are under wraps. “We’re glad to have resolution of this naming dispute, and will continue to deliver the great service our hundreds of millions of customers expect, providing the best way to always have your files with you,” Microsoft said in a canned statement today. We asked Microsoft for further clarification, but except for this statement, the company isn’t commenting on today’s announcement. All of this will sound awfully familiar to anybody who has followed Microsoft’s brands in the past. The Windows 8 Metro interface, after all, had just become a household name before the launch of Microsoft’s new operating system when the company had to change it because of what most pundits assume was a trademark dispute with Germany’s Metro AG. Today, nobody knows what to call the Windows 8 interface, its apps and design language, so most people still call it “Metro.”

Court-ordered mental health treatment may save money

    By Andrew M. Seaman

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - State-run programs that compel people with serious mental illness to get treatment may reduce costs, according to a new analysis of New York State's system known as Kendra's Law.

Addressing the concerns of some lawmakers, researchers found that treatment costs dropped by about half among those covered under the program in New York City and even more for those in other counties throughout the state, largely as a result of fewer hospital admissions.

"What we're hoping is that people will look at these types of analyses and say, ?yes there are costs up front but it appears that you realize cost savings over time,'" said Dr. Marvin S. Swartz, one of the study's authors from Duke University in Durham, North Carolina.

The assisted outpatient commitment (AOC) programs apply to people with serious mental disorders and a history of hospitalizations that stem from not sticking with treatments.

Patients in these programs are compelled by court order to show up for their prescribed care, though provisions for enforcement of the court's order are sometimes unclear.

The New York State law, passed in 1999 and named for a young woman pushed to her death onto subway tracks by a mentally ill person that year, authorizes AOC "to prevent a relapse which or deterioration which would likely result in serious harm to the patient or others."

While 45 U.S. states have enacted laws to create AOC programs, the laws remain controversial and often are not used because of concerns about civil rights, resources and costs.

"There is a lot of pushback from people on civil liberty grounds and grounds that it is not good policy. Also, that this is not good use of these funds," Swartz said.

"I'm hoping this kind of (report) can help focus the debate on a more practical ground rather than these rhetorical patterns that pass in space," Jeffrey Swanson, the study's lead author also from Duke University, said.

For their analysis, Swanson and his colleagues compared the costs of services for 520 people in New York City and 114 people in other New York counties during the year before and the two years after they were ordered into the program in 2004 or 2005.

Four-fifths of the patients in New York City and three-quarters of those in the other counties had a diagnosis of a schizophrenia spectrum disorder, the team writes in the American Journal of Psychiatry.

For those in the city, the average cost per patient per year fell from about $105,000 the year before they were ordered into the program to about $53,000 two years after they were ordered into the program.

The reduction was even steeper for those living in other New York counties, with an average cost per patient per year of about $104,000 before the program to $39,000 two years after.

A separate analysis found the cost reductions among those in the court-ordered program were about double what was found among people who were voluntarily seeking treatment.

"The biggest cost driver is hospitalization," Swartz said.

Overall, people in the program were less likely to return to the hospital, to use psychiatric emergency and crisis services and to be arrested. They also increased their use of case management and community treatment services and medication refills.

Dr. Jeffrey L. Geller, professor of psychiatry at the University of Massachusetts Medical School and medical director of the Worcester Recovery Center and Hospital, said the results are positive news.

"It may sway some folks who are in the middle of the issue and it's going to support the people who are already inclined to think the (AOC) is a worthwhile intervention," said Geller, who has researched this type of law but wasn't involved in the new study.

But he added that the results probably won't convince people who believe these laws are a violation of civil rights.

The researchers also caution that the study's results may not be applicable to other states that may have different AOC systems and mental health service infrastructures.

"The message should certainly be that the premise for this to work is that the services need to be available and (AOC) outpatient services are not going to compensate for a fragmented, under resourced mental health system," Swanson said.

Bus crash in southern Italy kills 38 people

ROME (AP) ? An Italian tour bus plowed through cars, crashed through the side wall of a highway bridge and plunged into a ravine, killing at least 38 people, authorities said Monday.

Rescuers wielding electric saws cut through the twisted wreckage of the bus looking for survivors overnight, and state radio quoted a local police chief as saying the bus driver was among the dead.

The bus lost control near the town of Monteforte Irpino in Irpinia, a largely agricultural area about 60 kilometers (40 miles) inland from Naples and about 250 kilometers (160 miles) south of Rome, hitting several cars before plunging some 30 meters (100 feet) off a viaduct on Sunday night.

It was not immediately clear why the bus driver lost control of the vehicle, but prosecutors were investigating technical problems and had ordered an autopsy on the driver.

Italy's Prime Minister Enrico Letta described the crash as a "dramatic moment" for his entire country.

"We are deeply pained by this tragedy that has touched many families and many children," Letta said from Athens, where he met with Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras.

A reporter for Naples daily Il Mattino, Giuseppe Crimaldi, told Sky TG24 TV from the scene that some witnesses told him the bus had been going at a "normal" speed on the downhill stretch of the highway when it suddenly veered and started hitting cars. Some witnesses thought they heard a noise as if the bus had blown a tire.

"All possible causes are under examination. It could be a combination of causes," Avellino Highway Police Chief Salvatore Imparato said on Sky TG24.

The bus was carrying a group of weekend holidaymakers from the town of Pozzuoli, on the coast east of Naples. The group had arrived at a hotel on Friday afternoon, and had spent the weekend visiting the spa and an early home of Padre Pio, a late mystic monk popular among Catholics, Michele Montagna, the manager of the hotel, told Sky TG24.

Relatives visited a makeshift morgue in a middle school to identify the dead on Monday. The bus, meanwhile, was towed from the site to be examined for possible malfunctions.

Firefighters extracted 37 bodies from the wreckage. Most of the dead were found inside the mangled bus, which lay on its side, while a few of the victims were pulled out from underneath the wreckage, state radio and the Italian news agency ANSA reported. One person died at the hospital.

At least 10 people, including five children, remained hospitalized on Monday.

Cars that were hit by the bus stood on the highway. One car's rear was completely crumpled, while another was smashed on its side. It was not immediately known if anyone in those cars had been injured.

Taking stock of Chicago's sports team owners

Sports fans are obsessed with rosters: Who's starting which day and who will be there to replace players who leave the team. But as compelling and likely of more significance is who owns the teams and who will succeed them when they're gone.

In Chicago, the five major sports teams are controlled by an individual or a family. In fact, they're recognizable by just their last names: McCaskey. Wirtz. Reinsdorf. Ricketts.

What would their franchises look like without the person at the top?

Bears: The vast McCaskey clan led by Virginia continues to own most of the franchise her father, George "Papa Bear" Halas, bought in 1921. But while the family insists the team is not for sale, keeping control could be tricky.

White Sox: Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf never has offered details about what's next for the franchise he bought in 1981 with group of investors for $19 million. But its future could be overseen by someone outside his family ? and the asking price could reach 10 figures.

Blackhawks: Fresh off his team's second Stanley Cup in four seasons, Rocky Wirtz is the face of a storied franchise he resurrected from his father's frugal grip. His successor could be his son, his cousin or both ? or the decision could spark a family struggle.

Bulls: Since 2010, Michael Reinsdorf, Chairman Jerry's 46-year-old son, has been president and chief operating officer, positions created for him to oversee business operations. The heir-apparent arrived already having owned interests in minor league teams and a stadium management company, with mixed success.

Cubs: The role of chairman Tom Ricketts, along with those of his siblings, is not expected to change any time soon. And unlike other Chicago teams, the Cubs lack the involvement of younger generations whose presence could signal a transition. In fact, none of Tom Ricketts' children have graduated high school yet.

BSkyB to upgrade set-top boxes and content to fend off BT

    By Kate Holton

LONDON (Reuters) - BSkyB plans to provide more and cheaper ways to access its premium content and Internet services to counter cash-rich rival BT's offer of free Premier League football to broadband customers.

The group, which has dominated pay-TV in Britain since Rupert Murdoch launched it in 1989 and reaches 10 million homes, said it would invest about 70 million pounds in the next financial year to improve on-demand programming and connectivity.

BSkyB said it will promote its Internet-connected set-top boxes which provide wifi in the home and allow users to view content on their televisions as well as providing access on laptops and tablets when they are out.

The company also announced full-year results in line with or above analysts' forecasts, a 500-million-pound share buy-back and an 18-percent dividend hike to try to temper investor concern over BT's entry into the market.

"This morning's results and accompanying commentary provide a clear reminder of BSkyB's underlying strengths including an unrivalled content proposition, loyal subscriber base, very strong cash flow and proven marketing skills," analysts at Westhouse said.

"We believe these characteristics will stand it in good stead when facing down growing competition for new customers, particularly from BT."

Shares in BSkyB - known for years for promising "jam tomorrow" due to its ever-present investment needs - dropped 3.3 percent by 1030 GMT. Its stock fell sharply on May 9 when BT announced its plans for the free sports offering.

The move is consistent with the group's historical approach of providing technology to enable customers to pay increasing amounts to access premium content such as sports and movies.

"The main concern will be the additional investment, but we see this as a pull-forward of existing plans," Citi analysts said in a note. "And at any rate, this may not even impact consensus earnings per share in 2014 given the buyback. We see this as a strong set of results and rate BSkyB Buy."

Adjusted operating profit for the year was up 9 percent to 1.3 billion pounds, helped by an increase in the amount customers are willing to pay for the service to an average annual amount of 577 pounds.

The church has been trying to secure the right to open one of the Government's planned charter-type schools but on Tuesday, the church was advised by email that its bid had been unsuccessful.

Destiny Church says it had received good feedback on its "robust" proposal to become a charter school and is disappointed that the application has been declined.

"We've been in the process all year, and shaping up a robust proposal with all the other applications," church spokesman Richard Lewis told NZ Newswire.

"It's disappointing to get the news that it's been unsuccessful."

Referred to by the Government as partnership schools, the small number of charter-type state schools won't have to follow the New Zealand curriculum and will employ alternative ways of learning.

"The schools will have greater freedom and flexibility to innovate and engage their students," the partnership schools working group website says.

Destiny Church representatives were told they had been shortlisted from 35 down to a handful at an event in Wellington last month.

"We received feedback that it was an excellent application, they were impressed with it," Mr Lewis said.

The church has been given no reason for being declined.

Destiny School is based in the heart of south Auckland and currently enrols 80 percent Maori and 10 percent Pacific Islander students.

The school teaches a "unique Christian-based character curriculum".

"Our vision is to empower students to fulfill their God-given potential and destiny through character-based learning and academic excellence in education," the school's website says.

Mr Lewis said the outcome of the application won't have any bearing on the church's approach to teaching students at Destiny School.

New Zealand's first charter-type schools, to be opened by 2014, will be located in "areas of significant educational challenge and under-achievement".
